Geneva lost the semi-final by a small margin

St Gallen CC vs Geneva, Pickwick T20 Cup semi-final, Schönau, Bern, 26 August 2018

St Gallen Cricket Club 119 for 7 in 18.5 overs (M Nasim 32*, Anser 2-13) beat Geneva Cricket Club 116 all out in 15 overs (Idrees 40, M Nasim 4-15) by 3 wickets

Geneva lost against St Gallen CC in a super exciting and tight semi-final in Bern last Sunday. An amazing bowling and fielding performance from Genevans was not enough to defend the low total of 116 runs. Idrees (40 off 21) and Ankit (22 off 22 balls) at the top of the order built up strong foundations for the rest of the lineup to follow on. After 10 overs, Geneva had a good score of 92 for 3, but when Ankit was dismissed by Musa in the 11th over, it only took St Gallen 26 balls to wipe out the rest of the batsmen! Geneva lost a ridiculous amount of 7 wickets for 21 runs with 5 full overs to spare… Another batting collapse cost us again a sweet spot in the finals. Bravo to St Gallen’s bowlers Musa and Nasim for taking a great advantage of the peculiar Bernese wicket by snatching 8 wickets for 35 runs altogether.

The second innings was a treat to watch thanks to Geneva bowlers showing their best. Ankit, Afif, Ashwin, Anser and Zahid displayed some beautiful variations and changing speeds, but the total was reached (not easily) with 7 balls remaining. The 8th and 9th wicket partnership between Nasim and Fletcher starring was the final nail in the coffin. St Gallen won by 7 wickets and then beat Bern CC in an anti-climatic final. Geneva cannot just get across that semi-final benchmark in the national T20 tournament and this has been a very frustrating occurence for the boys. Our club shall never give up though and will continue fighting to bring trophies, whether this year or the following years. Hard work and great sportsmanship shall pay one day or another!
